Guide to all you need to know when looking for small business website design packages.
The size and intricacy of your site are the two elements that determine how much labor is involved.
That implies a professional-looking 10-page informational website with standard customisation will be less expensive than a fully customized 50-page site with all the bells and whistles.
A website for a small business might cost less than R5 000 for a WordPress website or more than R5 000 for a custom website design..
That is a significant price range. So let’s break it down so you can obtain an accurate estimate of how much designing and developing your website will cost.

The 2 Options (With Pricing) For Designing And Developing A Small Business Website in South Africa.
Option 1: Hire A Professional
You should pay someone to develop your site for you if you’re too busy operating your business and/or technology isn’t your strong suit. It’s that easy.
If you’ve done any internet research or visited the websites of website designers/developers, you’ve most likely come across:
- There are no pricing mentioned.
- Prices range from outrageously low to astronomically high.
The good news is that we dug deep and found out how much it costs to develop a small business website in 2022 for you.
We discovered that the going rate in to build a modern, professional small business website was typically R5 000 – R25 000 but could be as much as R35 000 (or more) depending on the number of pages on the site and the amount of customization required for competent, experienced web designers who did list their prices.
Website Design vs. Website Development.
Website design and website development are commonly used interchangeably, however they are two distinct processes.
Working with a web designer is similar to working with an architect to build the plan for your home.
Working with a contractor to build your house is similar to website development.
Now that you have a general concept of how much things cost, let’s look at the particular aspects that influence the cost of developing a small company website:
1. Page Volume.
Let’s assume a web development business charges R6 500 for a 10-page website bundle, but your site requires 25 pages.
How much more would that cost?
Over and beyond what’s included in the normal website package, a reasonable rule of thumb is to add roughly R750/page for each page.
In this case, R4 000+ would be spent to add 15 pages to the regular website package’s 10 pages.
The updated total is R10 000+ when this sum is added to the initial base price of R6 500.
Obviously, every circumstance is different, but at the very least, this provides you with a credible cost estimate based on industry prices in.
2. Custom Development
Occasionally, a WordPress plugin will provide the precise functionality you want straight out of the box.
Other times, getting your site to accomplish what you want takes a lot of trial and error.
Everything would simply plug-and-play and operate properly the first time in an ideal world, but this is rarely the case.
To get everything operating as it should, a good bit of fiddling and testing is generally necessary.
3. Number of Design Revisions
The majority of website projects begin with a concept design, followed by one or two rounds of design modifications to ensure everything is perfect.
Some website designers will provide up to three rounds of design modifications.
A website designer technically has unlimited design modifications.
Keep in mind, too, that each design iteration increases the project’s final cost. Two rounds of design adjustments, in my experience, are usually more than enough.
4. Website Content Development
Any excellent website starts with solid, insightful, and convincing content.
If you’re launching a new website without any content, you’ll need to build it.
If you have an existing site with poor, stale, or obsolete material, it will need to be polished, upgraded, and maybe redesigned.
Over the years, I’ve realized that content production is the most difficult aspect of building a website. Our clients have trouble with this since it takes time and effort.
That’s why, a few years ago, we expanded our website design and development services to include expert copywriting.
Yes, you want your website to seem current and trendy, but the content on your website is what drives traffic.
5. Custom Site Layout
A theme or template is the foundation of every website. Nobody now builds a website from the ground up.
That would take far too much time and money.
A template or theme will usually get you 50-60% of the way there, but you’ll still need to do a lot of customizing and coding to have your site appearing and performing the way you want it to.
The higher the cost, the more customization and coding is necessary.
Templates and themes (WordPress) are a big reason why a good small business website may be built for R5 000 – R7 000 instead of R12 000+ or more.
6. Graphics and Custom Images
Fancy graphics and photos may give your site a one-of-a-kind appearance, but they come at a cost.
Complex visual effects sometimes need the use of specialized editing software, as well as the expertise of a bespoke graphic design professional.
7. Custom Logo
A personalized logo is a lovely touch to any website, even if it isn’t essential.
A personalized logo raises the level of trust and reliability. In, expect to pay between R750 and R3 000 for a decent-looking, professionally produced logo.
Option 2: Attempt To Do It Yourself (DIY)
You can completely design your own website if you have a basic grasp of web technology and are comfortable doing the job yourself.
The necessary raw resources aren’t prohibitively expensive:
- Domain name
- Website hosting
- SSL certificate
- Premium website theme
- Premium plugins
- Stock photos
- Tutorials
In all, you may expect to spend R700 – R1 200 to get up and going.
Obviously, the most expensive aspect of the DIY method is your time.
Don’t be shocked if it takes you 20-40 hours to create something of excellent quality that you can be happy of, even for a “basic” site.
That is, if you are already comfortable with the basics of website development. Multiply your time estimate by 2x or 3x if you’re completely new to this. I’m not being dramatic.
Most people underestimate how much time it takes to create a contemporary, well-engineered website.
However, if you currently have more time than money and aren’t intimidated by web technology, the DIY approach is a possible choice.
The Cost Of Website Updates, Upgrades, Maintenance & Licenses
Your job isn’t done after your website is live.
Maintaining it will take time, effort, and money, just like buying a house.
You’ll have annual hosting and maintenance payments, as well as annual license fees for premium plugins and services, for example.
As you enhance and develop your site, you’ll almost certainly need to acquire more photographs.
To improve your marketing efforts, you might recruit more workers or engage freelancers to help you create fresh personalized site material or videos.
To prevent your site from being hacked, you’ll need to do regular technical maintenance to apply updates and security fixes to WordPress core files and plugins. Yes, hackers attack even tiny company websites.
If you feel confident executing these upgrades yourself, that’s fantastic. However, ordinary upgrades can sometimes disrupt your site, so you’ll need to know what to do if this happens. Are you prepared to face…
The Shortcut To Building A Great Small Business Website
Employ a web developer!
Yes, I am opinionated, but I am also truthful. Most individuals underestimate how tough and time-consuming it is to create a current, professional website that produces leads and sales for their business.
If money is short right now and building your company website on your own is your only choice, do the best you can.
If you can afford it, however, hiring a skilled web designer/developer to construct (or remodel) your website can save you a lot of time, money, and aggravation – and the end result will be better than you could have done on your own.
I pay dentists, accountants, auto mechanics, and roofing contractors for their services for the same reason. They are generally able to complete the task faster, better, and for less money than I could.
